Tensions erupted in the Rajbari area of Rohanda Panchayat, Madhyamgram, as villagers attacked the house of a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader on Saturday midnight. The violence was triggered by allegations that the leader's husband protected an accused involved in the sexual assault of a seven-year-old girl.
Angry locals began vandalizing shops belonging to the accused, Rauf, who runs a grocery store, before targeting the house of the Panchayat member. Villagers accused her husband, Abul Hafiz, of attempting to shield the accused and dissuading the victim's family from reporting the incident to the police.
The situation escalated quickly, forcing Madhyamgram police to intervene. Despite police presence, the mob continued their protests, shouting slogans demanding justice. Additional police forces, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Combat Force, were deployed to bring the situation under control. The police had to resort to lathi charges and firing tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
By Sunday morning, the area remained tense with a significant police presence. Both Rauf, the accused, and Abul Hafiz, the Panchayat member's husband, were arrested by the police. The accused will be produced in court as the investigation continues.
